International Music Day has been happening on the longest day of the year (21 June) since 1982. This is the flagship event from the Music Day UK campaign team for #MusicDay2016 and we have been invited to stage a takeover of The London Bridge City Summer Festival – which is simply in one of the most amazing locations you could possibly find in London!
We have a wonderful array of live music across three venues...
An amphitheatre space dug into the embankment of the Thames, next to City Hall and which looks out onto Tower Bridge
Trans-Siberian Marching Band
A London-based 13 piece Balkan Brass Band formed in 2007. The group’s flamboyant, high-energy performances have earned them an established reputation on the Balkan, burlesque and festival scene both in the UK and beyond. A borderless bag of musical styles includes the band’s own take on Balkan, Klezmer, Turkish, Russian and Gypsy tunes, with a hint of hip hop. This is music to dance to!
The Vegetable Collective
With more firepower than a bazooka, The Vegetable Collective are a raucous quintuplet of North London warehouse-dwellers who combine Ska, Punk, Dub and Rap to create a manic live show. With regular live appearances across the London party scene and the UK festival circuit they provide serious on-stage and on-floor wreckage for those who wanna skank! Their music is catchy, deranged, highly addictive and always certain to mash-up the dance floor.
Nelson and Friends
Nelson & Friends is a collective in East London of afrofusion, which blends Mozambique music with jazz and funk. This is a newly-formed African music project created by a traditional musician and dancer from Mozambique – Nelson Neves, who is now based in London. With him is Kofi Kari Kari, Ghanaian globally reknowned percussionist; James Bennett, a jazz guitarist and Josh Bergson, a jazz and funk Bass player.
Sambattalion are a radically-inclusive samba band that formed in July 2014 out of a combined passion for banging drums and having a good time. They perform high-energy samba-fusion with their own unique twist of fun and individuality.
Carmen Mon Oxide
Carmen Mon Oxide will be our compere for the evening, and as she is a cabaret superstar and opera singer we can expect some great entertainment from her too!
An impressive piece of Victorian architecture for more acoustic acts
Raised in a musical family, Annique was singing before she could even speak, and began composing harmonies with her sister when she was just five years old. After being a much sought-after backing singer, Annique’s popularity is set to skyrocket with the release of Heads Up, which will be a powerful launch to her solo career and an opportunity for this promising singer to step out of the shadows into the limelight which she deserves.
Will Whisson is a singer/songwriter from the UK. Before launching his solo project, Will played lead guitar in Rock/Pop band Electric River for over 10 years, honing his craft for catchy melodies, poignant lyrics and honest songwriting.
Chili Sin Carne
Formed in London, the band delivers high-energy sets of Rumba and Latin numbers, as well as sophisticated instrumental classics, Boleros and Latin standards.
Palisander was described as ‘outstanding’ and ‘thrilling’ in reviews of the quartet’s performance at Brighton Early Music Festival last autumn. The group is delighted to have been selected for the prestigious St John’s Smith Square Young Artists’ Scheme 2016-2017 and were winners of the June Emerson Launchpad Prize for conservatoire chamber groups.
The London Riviera Pop-Up Bar
Laid-back DJ vibes at this beach-bar-styled venue
Making Music Choir
Join the Making Music Choir for a lunchtime concert and workshop from 12pm-2pm as they sing to celebrate Music Day!
The choir will be made up of staff, volunteers, members, friends and passers-by. Led by Janna Goodwille, we'll learn and perform a variety of songs suitable for all vocal ranges and abilities.
This vocal workshop will be flexible in style - allowing you to join or leave the choir at any point in the proceedings. We'll be encouraging passers-by to come and join in with us as we learn songs from scratch and then perform them. Anyone can turn up and have a go!
